Lilies

To Lily or not to Lily?

Lilies are an amazing family of flowers, revered all over the world for their beauty. Being so popular, the lily has collected a great number of meanings, all with one common theme - Purity.

According to literature, the Lily is a symbol of Innocence, Hope, Fertility, Motherhood, Transitions and Remembrance. Reading this list we think lilies must be the perfect gift to congratulate the woman who is just pregnant or had delivered her newborn baby girl or baby boy. If the little girl is called Lily, all the better!
According to old wives tales, a lily can also help to tell the sex of an unborn child. Give the mother-to-be the choice of a rose and a lily - if she chooses the rose, it will be a baby girl whilst if she picks the lily, it will be a baby boy!

As with most symbols of birth and purity, Lilies are also a symbol of death – traditionally seen as a new “birth” into the afterlife. Lilies were once commonplace on the graves of those who died too young and too innocent -nowadays the lily is a beautiful choice for Funeral arrangements and Remembrance bouquets.

As with bouquets of Roses, the colour of the lily alters the meaning of the flower and the message that you send. White lilies represent the purity of the Virgin Mary and the Angel Gabriel. The Archangel is frequently painted offering Maria a white lily to tell her that she would give birth to the Son of God. Just look at paintings of any saint - you’ll often find White lilies in images of St. Antony, St. Joseph and St. Agnes.

The Pink Stargazer lily represents Immense Wealth and Prosperity, making it a great present to congratulate someone on his or her new job or perhaps a new business venture.

Calla ‘Lily’

A bouquet with Calla Lilies is a symbol of rebirth and beauty, but we actually have to start by letting you in on a secret - the Calla Lilly is not a Lily at all! Its actual name is Zantedeschia – with a name like that, it’s no surprise we just call them callas! This gorgeous flower blooms all year round in its native South Africa and we have several bouquets that feature this unique bloom.

The lilies of Blossom and Twigs are sourced from Brede Fleur in The Netherlands, a specialist who grows an enormous amount of unique lilies. Many of our lilies are exclusive to our online shop at www.Blossomandtwigs.com and are completely unavailable anywhere else in the UK.

So choose your Lily bouquet, or perhaps a combined bunch – how about our lavish lily and rose bouquets? A symbol of purity suits pretty much everyone, so give the gorgeous gift of flowers to an innocent loved-one – or as close to innocent as you can find!

NB: Many kinds of lily are extremely toxic to cats, causing acute renal failure even when they eat only a small amount. Keep your lilies out of reach of playful kittens and cats!
